Directions to the conference venue

The Roles 2014 Sexuality and Gender Conference is to be held in the Strathcona Building, with Registration and refreshment breaks in the Ashley Building foyer and G22. These buildings are opposite one another and located at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus.  A map of campus can be obtained by clicking the following link: Edgbaston map.  Strathcona is to be found at R18 and Ashley at R17.

Travel & Accommodation

Getting to the University of Birmingham:


The following bus services from Birmingham city centre will bring you to the University: no. 21, 44, 61, 62 & 63. There is a travel information office within New Street Station, where you can obtain bus timetables and departure point information.


Most cross-country services to Birmingham arrive at New Street Station.  Up to six trains an hour depart for the University on the cross-city line (ten minutes to University station, final destination Longbridge or Redditch).


There are taxi ranks at New Street Station and throughout the city centre.  The journey to the University takes about ten minutes.


Approaching from the north west or south east along the M6:

Leave at Junction 6 (signposted Birmingham Central) to join the A38(M)

At the end of the motorway, keep to the right, go over a flyover, then through some underpasses to join the A38 Bristol Road

The University is on your right, two and a half miles from the city centre.

Approaching from the M42 north:

Leave at Junction 8 to join the M6 northbound and follow the instructions above.

Approaching from the south west:

Leave the M5 at Junction 4 signposted Birmingham SW to join the A38

The University is approximately eight miles from the motorway.

Approaching from the M40:

It is easier to turn south on the M42 and leave at Junction 1, heading north on the A38 Bristol Road

The University is approximately eight miles from the motorway.

Situated along the main bus route (bus no. 61, 62 & 63) to the University of Birmingham, this hotel is a 10 minute walk from Birmingham New Street Train station.

We will do everything in our power to ensure that this conference is free of charge, however, as we are still waiting to hear back from potential sources of funding, it is possible that we may need to charge a fee on the day after all.

We will let registered delegates know as soon as possible if this turns out to be the case.


The conference fee will not exceed £15, and we hope will turn out to be £0!

Still accepting submissions for the Roles Conference

We’ve had lots of really interesting abstracts for the conference – thanks to everyone who has submitted a proposal so far. The deadline has been extended until 1st April and we will be confirming accepted papers on 4th April. 250-word abstracts on any aspects of sexuality and gender research should be sent to along with a 50-word bio.

Hi everyone. We are delighted to annouce that the call for papers and zines for the 4th annual Roles Sexuality and Gender Conference is now available!

This is a one day intersectional and interdisciplinary conference for postgrad and early career researchers on May the 16th 2014 at the University of Birmingham.

The event is open to all discliplines and fields, and to all genders and sexualities.

Abstracts of 250 words and 50 word bios should be sent to by Friday the 21st of March 2014.

We will also be hosting a zine stall, so please contact us here or at if you have a zine you would like to be included at our event, and/or if you would like be be involved in helping out on the day.

Please distribute widely.
